Ship 9-11 Memorial Event

Shippensburg University will honor the men and women who lost their lives in the War on Terror at the 2010 September 11th Memorial Event.

The event is sponsored by the Student Veterans of America (SVA), an organization whose main focus is to ensure the well being of veterans as they make the transition from military to college life. Shippensburg’s newly-founded SVA is one of 300 chapters nationwide. It’s estimated the university has between 300 and 400 veterans as students.

The event is part of the SVA’s “Military Appreciation Week.” During the week of Sept. 6, the organization will place 6,500 flags in front of Ezra Lehman Memorial Library, approximately one for every service member who died in the War on Terror. The flags are donated by the Shippensburg VFW.

The memorial event begins at 9:11 a.m. Sept. 11 in front of Lehman Library. Speakers will include Major General Gregg F. Martin, commandant of the United States Army War College; Cumberland County Commissioner Barbara Cross, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel; Dr. Denny Terrell, Shippensburg University’s vice president of administration and finance and a retired Air Force brigadier general; and James Powers, Pennsylvania’s Director of Homeland Security. University music groups will also perform with the Shippensburg VFW and American Legions color guard and rifle units also participating.
