Alpha Omicron Pi Supports of National Hazing Prevention Week

Brentwood – In honor of National Hazing Prevention Week, Alpha Omicron Pi is encouraging all of our chapters to participate in showing their campus and community that we are against hazing. This week, September 20-24, 2010, is National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) and is supported by HazingPrevention.org.

Chapters are encouraged to support all hazing prevention events on their campus as well as discuss hazing prevention within their own chapter. Alpha Omicron Pi has a Policy Regarding Hazing which reaffirms our position that hazing in any form is absolutely prohibited. The policy further states that “Hazing is not in conformity with the Rituals of Alpha Omicron Pi nor does it project an image of sisterhood and fraternal love.” Visit the AOII Hazing Hotline to learn how to anonymously report hazing.

“We want to encourage our chapters to show their campuses that Alpha Omicron Pi will not tolerate hazing,” said Barb Zipperian, International President. “We need to speak out against this behavior and these horrible traditions not only this week, but every day of every week.”

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded in 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. AOII has over 141,000 initiated members in 188 collegiate chapters and over 135 alumnae chapters across the United States and Canada. Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women’s fraternity promoting friendship for a lifetime, inspiring academic excellence and lifelong learning, and developing leadership skills through service to the fraternity and community.
