SU Class of 2009 received their diplomas last Saturday, May 2nd. Story taken from The Sentinel Shippensburg University president William Ruud joked Saturday morning under overcast that he had made a deal with the skies to keep the rain away from graduation at Seth Grove Stadium. It worked. For 960 undergraduates the skies remained clear long enough for them to turn their tassels and throw their mortars into the air outdoors.
Marjorie Rendell, the 43rd first lady of Pennsylvania and a United State District Court judge, addressed the graduates. ‘This day is yours graduates,” Rendell said to loud applause. “You are entitled to sit back and pat yourself on the back for a job well done. This is the beginning of a new chapter of your life with a multitude of adventures and experiences and yes, choices”. Rendell urged the graduates to use their gift — their knowledge gained at Shippensburg — to help others.
“As you begin to make life choices, begin to ask important questions,” Rendell said. “Will I take my time and talents and what I learned at Shippensburg and make them work for me? Will I choose to go out into the community and share my talents with others and improve the lives of others? Each of you has been given much and it is now your responsibility to take what you’ve learned and use it wisely.”
Rendell warned the students of four dangers — futility, expediency, timidity and comfort — that could prevent them from using their talents to their fullest. “I challenge you today,” Rendell said. “Be doers, not drifters. You have been given gifts — do something with them. Do not accept the status quo. Question it. Think about it. Change it. Do not doubt your ability to make a difference. Don’t be complacent. You are all far too smart and energetic for that. Use the leadership skills, the mentorship skills, and the citizenship skills you have developed during your time at Shippensburg.”
