Welcome SU Class of 2016

Members of the Shippensburg University Class of 2016 will start their Shippensburg experience when they move-in this Thursday (Aug. 23).  Approximately 1,567 new students will be part of the move onto campus Thursday as well as participating in the Fall Welcome Week program to help them make the transition to university life. They will be joined by about 350 transfer students during the program.  Overall, the university expects to have 7,725 undergraduate and graduate students when classes begin Aug. 27. Final numbers will be available sometime in late September.

SU Kappa Beta Gamma wins Chapter of the Year

The Shippensburg University chapter of Kappa Beta Gamma Sorority was recently awarded the group’s national Chapter of the Year Award.
The award was presented to the Omicron Chapter at Shippensburg at the sorority’s annual convention.Chapter President Samantha Wallace accepted the award for the chapter that was chartered at Shippensburg in 2008.
According to information from the organization, the mission of Kappa Beta Gamma is to improve its members morally, socially and intellectually, and to better the schools and communities in which its members live through leadership and philanthropy. The award is presented annually to the chapter that most fully embraces and pursues this mission. Shippensburg’s chapter was recognized due to its demonstrated leadership both within Kappa Beta Gamma and within the local community, the information said.
The information cited a number of examples for the chapter to receive the award, including:

• Sending members to help recruit new members for the sorority’s chapter at Frostburg University.
• Participating in national events, including a planning retreat in Atlanta.
• Winning Greek Week on campus, being named Sorority of the Year and member Kate Morrone being awarded Sorority Woman of the Year.
• Participating in numerous philanthropic projects including raising funds to support ovarian cancer research, raising funds for the Drew Michael Taylor Foundation, volunteering Friday nights at a youth program in Chambersburg and participating in a walk for multiple sclerosis research.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all ...

SU Graduation Saturday May 5th

The Honorable Justice Thomas G. Saylor of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court will present the commencement address May 5 during the Spring undergraduate commencement ceremony at Shippensburg University.  

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Seth Grove Stadium. Approximately 1,000 students are expected to participate.

Saylor did his undergraduate work at the University of Virginia and received his law degree from Columbia University in 1972. He then returned to his native Somerset County where he worked in a general practice setting and served as First Assistant District Attorney.

He was appointed director of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection in 1982, and First Deputy Attorney General of the Commonwealth in 1984. Following this government service, Justice Saylor was a litigation partner for several years in the Harrisburg office of Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott.

He was elected to the Pennsylvania Superior Court in 1993, and in 1997 to his current position on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was retained in 2007 to serve a second ten-year term.

Run for the Roses

Vineyard Vines is partnering with Woodford Reserve (the “Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby”) on the 7th annual Woodford Reserve $1,000 Mint Julep program. This limited-edition drink will be presented in a one-of-a-kind box with vineyard vines silk lining. Proceeds from the cup will benefit The Heart of a Horse Foundation, dedicated to the well-being of horses in America. Watch the 138th Kentucky Derby this Saturday May 5th, post time 6:24 pm.

Relay for Life Carlisle

As many of you know, I lost my mom last fall within 8 weeks of hearing the words "you have cancer". I miss her terribly, but am trying to make something good come out of that loss. My book club friends have volunteered to join me in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life in May.

Relay For Life celebrates loved ones who have won their battle against cancer, remembers those who are no longer with us, and fights back against this disease that touches so many. I am determined to make a difference, and I hope you will join me. I will be walking on May 18 and 19th at Carlisle High School.

Little Princess Playhouse

Looking for something to keep your 'little legacy' entertained this weekend??? Little Princess Playhouse at Shippensburg University will present programs April 21 and 28th.

The playhouse, sponsored by the Department of Music and Theatre Arts, will present Snow White and The Frog Princess at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. April 21 and 28.

The playhouse has performances in Stewart Hall, recognized by its castle-like exterior presenting a perfect location for children’s theatre.

The cast is made up of university students, many of whom are elementary education majors who love working with children. According to Taber Timmons, “This is an amazing way to instill wisdom. Each story has a moral, whether it’s the danger of jealousy or that beauty is deeper than how you look, and the children will see these truths in a new way.”
