Tau Lambda Updates
From Tau Lambda President, Tawny Eder:
Recruitment has just finished, the chapter had great attendance at their events and have 10 New Members. 13 of our 25 active members will be graduating this May, so these numbers are very promising for us. We also have a number of interested freshman, and are hoping to keep in touch with them through the semester and into the spring, when they can go through the new member process.
One thing that the chapter is planning is an alcohol awareness event that will be held through the Shippensburg campus. There is a committee of sisters that are in the process of setting this up and brainstorming ideas, and we plan to hold this before the end of October. So far the chapter is planning to collaborate with another sorority or fraternity and inviting the new Miss. PA (Courtney Thomas). She was a student at Shippensburg and is still close friends with a few of the chapter's sisters. Her platform is alcohol awareness, so we are trying to ask her to be a speaker at the event. We are still in the developing stages, so if you or any of the alumnae have any ideas, please do not hesitate to share these ideas.
Another thing that the chapter is planning on doing, is helping another sister with a class. One of our sisters, Amanda Moyer, is a social work major and a class that she is taking this semester is focused on planning and executing a party/event. This party/event is to bring awareness to something, and this year they are bringing awareness to disabilities, and strictly with children. Tau Lambda is very interested in being a part of this and being awareness to disabilities, and are hoping that Amanda's teacher will allow us to set up a table where we can educate people about our philanthropy, juvenile arthritis. However, we will not know until next week how the chapter can help, and participate, in this event. We are also hoping that this brings good PR to the chapter as well. This event is (tentatively) taking place on November 17th.
Those are just a few of the major things that are occuring within the chapter thus far. We also are hosting our ELC (Educational Leadership Consultant) Molly Fenton this week. She has already begun to meet with sisters and even attended one of our recruitment events! She has been a great help to the chapter thus far and we are very excited to learn more from her while she is here.

Alpha Omicron Pi Supports of National Hazing Prevention Week
Brentwood – In honor of National Hazing Prevention Week, Alpha Omicron Pi is encouraging all of our chapters to participate in showing their campus and community that we are against hazing. This week, September 20-24, 2010, is National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) and is supported by HazingPrevention.org.
Chapters are encouraged to support all hazing prevention events on their campus as well as discuss hazing prevention within their own chapter. Alpha Omicron Pi has a Policy Regarding Hazing which reaffirms our position that hazing in any form is absolutely prohibited. The policy further states that “Hazing is not in conformity with the Rituals of Alpha Omicron Pi nor does it project an image of sisterhood and fraternal love.” Visit the AOII Hazing Hotline to learn how to anonymously report hazing.
“We want to encourage our chapters to show their campuses that Alpha Omicron Pi will not tolerate hazing,” said Barb Zipperian, International President. “We need to speak out against this behavior and these horrible traditions not only this week, but every day of every week.”
Alpha Omicron Pi was founded in 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. AOII has over 141,000 initiated members in 188 collegiate chapters and over 135 alumnae chapters across the United States and Canada. Alpha Omicron Pi is an international women’s fraternity promoting friendship for a lifetime, inspiring academic excellence and lifelong learning, and developing leadership skills through service to the fraternity and community.

Ship 9-11 Memorial Event
Shippensburg University will honor the men and women who lost their lives in the War on Terror at the 2010 September 11th Memorial Event.
The event is sponsored by the Student Veterans of America (SVA), an organization whose main focus is to ensure the well being of veterans as they make the transition from military to college life. Shippensburg’s newly-founded SVA is one of 300 chapters nationwide. It’s estimated the university has between 300 and 400 veterans as students.
The event is part of the SVA’s “Military Appreciation Week.” During the week of Sept. 6, the organization will place 6,500 flags in front of Ezra Lehman Memorial Library, approximately one for every service member who died in the War on Terror. The flags are donated by the Shippensburg VFW.
The memorial event begins at 9:11 a.m. Sept. 11 in front of Lehman Library. Speakers will include Major General Gregg F. Martin, commandant of the United States Army War College; Cumberland County Commissioner Barbara Cross, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel; Dr. Denny Terrell, Shippensburg University’s vice president of administration and finance and a retired Air Force brigadier general; and James Powers, Pennsylvania’s Director of Homeland Security. University music groups will also perform with the Shippensburg VFW and American Legions color guard and rifle units also participating.
